1. The Qurna Evictions
Qurna is a village right on top of an ancient burial site known as the Valley of the Kings. The place contained tombs of high-ranking Ancient Egyptians including close advisers of the pharaohs so it’s natural for archaeologists to want to excavate the site. But the problem is that the people of the Qurna village of squatter houses did not want to move.
It has been a problem for the Egyption government for more than a century and they have been trying to get the villagers to move but time and time again they refused. It was also believed that the villagers were plundering the tombs and discreetly selling off valuable artifacts when they sell souvenirs to tourists.
In 1948, the government built a “New Qurna” village but they refused saying that the new settlement was located away from their farms and the tourist trade.
Then another attempt to move them in the 1990s was made. The government used force this time and resulted in the death of four villagers. Because of this, people were not aggreeing with their forceful methods, so the forcing was toned down a bit. But officials were determined on finally moving the villagers because they believed the villagers were damaging the tombs by keeping animals in them.
So in the 2000s, the government built a second “New Qurna” near the original Qurna but away from the Valley of the Kings and told the villagers that they should move if they want but if they don’t, they would be given nothing when the Old Qurna is demolished. The place is finally bulldozed in 2006 and excavation and exploration was then made which of course made a lot of significant discoveries.
The eviction of the people of Qurna still remains a controversy where some people are glad of the new discoveries while some still does not agree on how the government handled the situation.
