A rusted cargo ship that lacks crew and goods, bearing an Indonesian flag was found drifting off of Myanmar.
A bunch of fishermen came across the ship which bears the name ‘Sam Rataulangi PB 6000’ was seen drifting down the Gulf of Martaban which is about 7 miles away from Myanmar’s busy commercial capital.
Military personnel boarded the vessel this Thursday early in the morning to check out the ship to confirm the ships status.
The official statement says that there were no sailors or goods on the vessel.
There is a website called Marine Traffic which lists all the movements of ships around the globe. The ship was built in 2001 and had a deadweight of 26,500 tonnes.
The last time the ship’s transponder was detected was off the coast of Taiwan back in 2009.
This is the first on record of an abandoned ship appearing in Myanmar’s waters.
Quite often unseaworthy vessels are taken to Bangladesh’s southern Chittagong province, which houses a thriving — and controversial — ship-breaking industry.
