5 Modern Controversies Surrounding Ancient Egypt

2. Mummified Animal Scandal

We know that other than mummified humans, archeologists have also found mummified animals in catacombs. They are believed to be used as offerings to the gods that during that time, there was a whole industry centred around rearing dogs, cats, monkeys and even crocodiles specifically for mummification.

The animals were chosen, preserved and wrapped in a pleasing majestic way and then the corpses were then sold to pious Egyptians who wants to win favors in the afterlife.

It was in the year 2015 that the University of Manchester together with the Manchester Museum found an anomaly when they began X-raying the animal mummies that they have in their possession.

They found out that many of their mummies did not actually contain any animal carcasses! Only 1/3rd of the mummies contained a full animal inside the wrapping, another 1/3rd contained animal matter of some sort and the last third contained mud, sticks, feathers, eggshells and other materials believed to represent the mummified animals.

Thus, the discovery led to speculations of counterfeit and that the Egyptian priests were ripping off their customers by selling anything but the animal and wrapping them in the shape of the animal that was supposed to be used. Researches also believed that the supply of sacred animals couldn’t satisfy the demand for them even with breeding them on an industrial scale.

But because there are no real evidence and only just mere speculations, was it really fraud or did people in ancient egypt knew what they were buying and intended to trick their god instead?
